The bars in the Germany pavilion at Epcot are something of a disappointment. Why? Because there are none, which is pretty crazy. Sure, large quantities of beer are served in the pavilion, especially on a weekend, but there is not one true bar that has any sort of seating area.

What is here is something that you may not think of when you think Germany: wine. The Weinkeller (In German “w” is pronounced like a “v”), is a small wine shop just off of the promenade. There are no seats here, but there are a handful of tables at standing height, or perhaps leaning height if you have been walking (or drinking) a lot.

German wines are almost all white, and tend toward the sweeter end of the spectrum. If you are familiar with riesling, gewürztraminer, or eiswein, they are all common in Germany. If you are not familiar, those are pronounced REES-ling, gah- VURTS-duh-mee-ner, and ice wine (easy one) and they are sweet and fruity with the ice wine being very sweet and dessert-like.

Wines are available at the Weinkeller by the glass, but the most popular choice is the wine flight. You choose three 2-ounce glasses from a list of six wines (or you pay a little extra and try them all). While you are sampling your wines, take a gander at the stone, beams, vines, and iron fixtures that make this space feel very Bavarian.

The Weinkeller is one of those great Epcot “secret” spots that are rarely busy and unexpectedly enjoyable. While you may not be familiar with German wine, you may find a desire to know more before you leave.
